Save the Date Cards are sent out to guests before you send your wedding invitations. Typically sent 1-2 years before the wedding to announce your wedding & set a date for the big day. Save the Date Cards do what they say. They formally announce your wedding to your friends & family and simply ask them to 'Save The Date' of your wedding to ensure that they will be able to attend.

Typically, you will need to send one save the date card for each guest who will require an invitation (so it is acceptable to send one save the date card for a couple who live together for example and not needed for every single guest).

A typical wording for a save the date is shown above but it is not essential that you include a venue for your wedding if you have not yet arranged this. As you will be sending formal invitations at a later date, these will include all of the finer details of your wedding that guests will need to know. At this point in your wedding planning, guests simply need to know who is getting married and when this will be.

Save the date cards are very useful as many of your guests will lead very busy lives and it's essential that they can plan in advance and book your wedding into their diaries. Particularly important if you plan to marry abroad and will allow your guests to budget and save their pennies.
